JAMES A. AVERY, MD, FCCP, FACP, FAAHPM
Jim fulfilled a life-long dream of working in New York City when he became the Senior Medical Director at the Visiting Nurse Service of New York Hospice Care in January of 2004. Previously, he served as the Senior Medical Director of The Hospice of the Florida Suncoast which was the largest hospice in the United States at the time. He is board-certified in Hospice & Palliative Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Pulmonary. He earned his medical degree at the University of South Florida, completed residency in Internal Medicine at Northwestern University, and completed fellowship training in Pulmonary and Critical Care in Tampa. Passionate about whole person medical care, Dr. Avery speaks locally and nationally about end-of-life issues and the intersection of spirituality and medicine. He has been married for twenty-five years to his life-long sweetheart, Jan. Together they have served in missions to Taiwan and Mexico. They have three children, Jonathan, Joseph, and Juli, reside in Summit, NJ and attend the Presbyterian Church at New Providence where Jim also teaches Sunday School.
ELAINE LEONG ENG, MD
Dr. Elaine Leong Eng, a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, is a graduate of Princeton University and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Weill-Cornell Medical College and faculty at the Alliance Theological Seminary’s Graduate School of Counseling. Trained in the Lay Ministry Program of Concordia College, Dr. Eng integrates faith, medical and psychological issues to provide mental health education to many audiences. Avenues for this include speaking engagements, radio, and writing. Her book, “MARTHA, MARTHA”: HOW CHRISTIANS WORRY (The Haworth Pastoral Press) is a text on anxiety disorders and the church community. Her new book, A CHRISTIAN APPROACH TO OVERCOMING DISABILITY: A DOCTOR’S STORY is an account of her career, ministry and personal journey as a blind physician.
Dr. Eng is a psychiatrist in private practice and the past President of the Board of Directors at the Boro Pregnancy Counseling Center in New York. Currently she serves on Focus on the Family’s Physician’s Resource Council and with various projects of CMDA. She is the recipient of the Dr. Paul Kay Award for her writing, the Queens County Psychiatric Society’s award for “outstanding inspirational leadership” and Heartbeat International’s Servant Leadership Award.
MEREDITH A.M. HAWKINS, MD
Meredith joyfully prays with and arranges retreats for the medical student community at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine where she is Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of the Medical Scientist Program. Meredith earned her M.D. degree cum laude from the University of Toronto and a Master of Science in Clinical Research Methods cum laude from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Her growing interest in the global epidemic of obesity and diabetes has led to speaking engagements in Thailand, Uganda and Kenya. Dr Hawkins has received research grants from the National Institutes of Health, the American Diabetes Association, the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation International and the Diabetes Action Foundation International. She is the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including the Outstanding Clinical Associate Physician Award from the National Institutes of Health and the Junior Physician Scientist Award from the American Federation of Medical Research. She resides in the Upper West Side and attends Church of the Heavenly Rest.
JENNIFER JAO, MD
Jennifer has a heart for missionary work as a physician trained in internal medicine and pediatrics. A French Literature major, Jennifer attended Tulane University for and also studied at the Sorbonne in France. She earned her medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia and completed her residency training in Medicine/Pediatrics at Rush University Medical Center. She went on to serve at the Lawndale Christian Health Center in Chicago, IL as Director of HIV Clinical Services. She regularly takes medical missions trips to Africa and has served in Benin, Gabon, and Ethiopia. Jennifer will begin The Fellowship in Infectious Diseases at Mount Sinai Hospital in July, 2007. She resides in Harlem with her husband, Greg, and they attend New Life Fellowship Church.
JANET KIM, MD & DAVID KIM, MD
David and Janet Kim have been married for three years and share a passion for domestic missions. They have spearheaded the establishment of Beacon, the first faith based healthcare center in New York State. A native New Yorker, David graduated from Styvesant, Columbia University, and SUNY-Downstate Medical School. Janet graduated from Emory University and New York Medical College. They both trained for residency in Medicine/Pediatrics at The Staten Island University Hospital. While in medical school, David was compelled to prayerfully cultivate a fellowship group on every medical campus which has culminated in InterMed, a community of over 200 medical students representing every medical school in Greater NYC. Through Redeemer, he also founded Arukah ministries and has served as a volunteer physician for the Bowery Rescue Mission. The Kims reside in Staten Island with their daughters, Grace and Joy, and attend Redeemer Presbyterian Church.
FREDRIC O. LEE, DDS
Fredric, a native Texan, in 1999 realized that despite having achieved the “American Dream,” he was completely empty within. In 2000, having experienced the collapse of his marriage and the loss of all the material trappings that had symbolized his life, he turned to God and was born again. With his steps ordered by the Lord, Fredric bears witness to the transformation and restoration available in the spiritual, personal, and professional lives of those who call upon the name of Jesus Christ. By the Grace of God, Dr. Lee is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Dentistry at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. Prior to this position, he served as Senior Dentist for Premier Healthcare in Manhattan where he specialized in providing dental care for the developmentally disabled. Dr. Lee has held staff positions at the William F. Ryan Community Heath Center, Terence Cardinal Cooke Medical Center, and United Cerebral Palsy of NY, in addition to owning a private practice. He is a graduate of the New York University College of Dentristry and an active member of the New York State Task Force for Special Care in Dentistry. He resides in New Jersey with his wife, Kathy, and daughter and attends First Baptist Church of South Orange.
MARK I. TRAVIN, MD, FACC, FASNC
Mark was raised in a Reform Judaism household, but came to accept Christ while Director of the Coronary Care Unit at Roger Williams Medical Center at Brown University. He currently serves as the Director of the Nuclear Cardiology Department at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and is also a Professor of Clinical Nuclear Medicine and Clinical Medicine. Previously, he attended the University of Pennsylvania Medical School and completed residency at the Lenox Hill Hospital. He received fellowship training in Cardiovascular Disease in the Brown University Integrated Program and then completed a Nuclear Cardiology Fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Mark, his wife, Makiko, and 3 children, Daniel, Namiko, and Hanako all reside in Westchester where they attend Trinity Presbyterian Church.

JEANNETTE YUEN, MD
Jeannette, a cardiologist with the Scarsdale Medical Group and staff physician at White Plains Hospital, is passionate about her ministry through her practice. Born in Malaysia and raised in Hong Kong, Jeannette came to the United States for high school and went on to complete the Honors Program in Medical Education at Northwestern University. She underwent training in Internal Medicine at the Michael Reese Medical Center, a University of Chicago affiliate. She then completed her cardiology fellowship at the Baylor College of Medicine and a specialized heart failure fellowship at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center. She is triply board-certified in Internal Medicine, Noninvasive Cardiology, and Nuclear Cardiology. She resides with her two children, Anil and Arvind, in Scarsdale, NY and attends Redeemer Presbyterian Church through which she is active in the healthcare fellowship. She is an avid skier and salsa dancer.
CMDA Area Director
ALICE (ALI) KO, MD, FACOG
Born in the Bronx, Ali accepted Christ in high school and is thrilled to be living and serving in the heart of Manhattan. She graduated from the Honors Program in Medical Education at Northwestern University with degrees in Biomedical Engineering/Computer Applications and medicine. She completed a residency in Gynecology and Obstetrics at The Johns Hopkins Hospital followed by private practice in Princeton, NJ. In 2005, she moved to NYC, joined Doctors of the World for which she examined and wrote affidavits for victims of torture who seek US asylum, and began a biblical hermeneutics course through Project Timothy. Subsequently, she served in missions for disaster relief to New Orleans and Pakistan. She also ventured to Morocco to serve the poor. Most recently she served in Malaysia in 2007 and Honduras with Intermed students in 2008. She now is the Area Director for the Greater NYC Christian Medical and Dental Associations and serves as a gynecologist at Premier Healthcare, a division of the Young Adult Institute providing gynecological care for the disabled. Ali attends Redeemer Presbyterian Church.
