Dr. Ali Ko, the NYC area director gave a talk on missions at Chinese Evangel Mission Church of Queens (http://cem.xboxplayer.com) where council member, Dr. Elaine Eng, attends service. Located at 203-10 Rocky Hill Rd., Bayside, Queens 11361, the church is led by Pastor George Ibach, whose daughter Michaela leads the CMDA fellowship at the New Jersey Med. Dr. Ko gave her talk at the 9:30 am service, highlighting missions trips to New Orleans, Pakistan, and Morocco as well as the events through which God brought her to her position as the area director for Greater NYC. She encouraged both physicians and non-physicians to serve in the missions field, citing Acts 2:42-47 as her personal encouragement to seek the Lord’s will and to lead others to become saved. For those interested in missions opportunities, please go to the tab on the upper right or click here.

Five residents/fellows and an equal number of attendings attended this recent gathering hosted by Mike and Rennie Rhee (PGY-4 Physiatry at Kessler & PGY-1 Medicine at NYU). We were glad to welcome newcomers, both attendings and a resident, from the Bronx. An amazing spread of soba noodle salad, three incredibly large platters of sushi, and fried rice were enjoyed by those present. Worship was led by the hosts, and we discussed how to listen to God’s will as well as how to remain faithful when God’s voice is not clear to us.

Dr. Ali Ko had this to say about the retreat:
Twenty physicians, dentists, residents, and their families participated in the First Annual Greater NYC Retreat at Camp of the Woods for a time of Rest & Restoration. It was a wonderful time of praying, sharing, and community building. Dr. Elaine Eng led a powerful devotional focused upon Acts 1. Dr. Brad Cruse shared his testimony. Dr. Rebekah Kim led worship. The Council convened for their quarterly business meeting and all attending physicians and dentists were welcome. All had a chance to enjoy God’s creation as they hiked amongst the stunning fall foliage. The Saturday evening bonfire with S’mores gave us all chance to relive childhood memories and create new ones. We now have two attending physicians, Drs. Elaine Eng & Olympia Kovich, who are spearheading attending fellowship and future gatherings.

Approximately 60 students and 3 attendings from Columbia, Cornell, Mount Sinai, New York COM, New York Medical College (NYMC), New York University (NYU), Robert Wood Johnson (RWJ), Sophie Davis, SUNY-Downstate, and Touro COM, attended this gathering held in Riverbank State Park. We were blessed by a brisk but sunny October day. Worship was led by a couple students and then David Chen from RWJ helped break the ice by having everyone introduce themselves and then have us spray each other with silly string! After grace was said by Dr. Ako Tabetah, a picnic lunch was served. Group photos of those attending were taken and those present broke off to fellowship with each other. Dr. Ali Ko offered spiritual support to the students as well as opportunities to meet with Christian Attendings.

Elijah Kim helped set up this talk with Dr. Harold Paul Adolph. Dr. Adolph spoke at Surgery Grand Rounds at Beth Israel on October 2, 2008 at 8 am and then with InterMed at 7 pm at NYU School of Medicine. He spoke about how God has answered his prayers during his career as a missionary doctor and surgeon, spending time in areas as diverse as Taiwan, Bangladesh, Niger, and Ethiopia. Students from Albert Einstein, Columbia, Mt. Sinai, and NYU attended this event to hear the words of this career missionary. He encouraged all those who are led to missions work and advised those interested to seek a residency with a broad experience. Please look at the website of the hospital in Ethiopia that he help build - www.soddo.org and how surgeons in this country may spend their time training local physicians overseas - www.paacs.net
