This gathering was held at Brad & Laura Cruse’s’s home on the Upper West Side. We were treated with Southern hospitality to an assortment of soups including: taco soup topped with Fritos, garlic baked potato soup, and cream of carrot.  Other items on the menu of significance were: Mexican cornbread and dump cake!  There was significant representation from both New York and New Jersey! A decision was made at this meeting to pursue more purposeful and more regular meetings. If you would like to be invited this or future Dental Fellowship gatherings, please contact the NYC Area Director.

Another fabulous resident, Erin Kil (Dermatology @ St. Luke’s-Roosevelt) hosted this residents & fellows gathering - a testament to God’s continued faithfulness…

Fall 2008 Events

1) CMA weekly meetings (Every Wednesday) at the City College of New York campus.

2) Hunger and Homelessness awareness week: November 16-22, 2008.

Each year, one week before Thanksgiving, National Coalition for the Homeless and the National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness co-sponsor National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. During this week, a number of schools, communities and cities take part in a nationwide effort to bring greater awareness to the problems of hunger and homelessness.
The CCNY chapter of CMA plans to work alongside Students Helping Out (SHOUT) and the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) during this week. Any donations will be greatly appreciated.

3) Operation Christmas Child: November 17 – 24, 2008.

Operation Christmas Child brings joy and hope to children in desperate situations around the world through gift-filled shoe boxes and the Good News of God’s love. Since 1993, more than 61 million shoe boxes have been packed, shipped, and delivered across the globe. People of all ages can be involved in this simple, hands-on missions project while focusing on the true meaning of Christmas—Jesus Christ.
The CCNY chapter of CMA plans to collect monetary donations, shoeboxes, and gifts throughout this week in an attempt to bring joy to the lives of young ones throughout the world. Again, donations are welcome.

4) Sunday Worship: December 7, 2008.

On December 7th we plan to host a Sunday Service on campus. We hope to invite Christian doctors and Youth leaders to direct the service and speak about their experiences during their years in Medical School and how Jesus was a part of their journey. This event will be held on the CCNY campus.

Spring 2008 Events

1) See you at the Pole

The CCNY chapter of CMA will be hosting this every semester as a prayer/worship event. It is scheduled for January 26, 2009. 8am - 9am.

2) International Praise and Worship Night: April 3, 2009.

April is our chapter’s month to host an InterMed-wide event. International Praise and Worship Night will be that event.

Last semester’s event was a huge success, and we hope next semester’s will be as well. The theme for last year’s event was rock the world. This year, we hope to have a theme that will somehow be linked directly to an organization we hope to support through voluntary donations.
Students will be able to perform poetry and recitations, sing, play instruments, dance, etc. Dinner and dessert will be served. It will take place in the Faculty Dining Room on CCNY’s campus. This event is free, and is open to the whole CCNY community. Souvenirs will be placed on each table for attendees to take with them.

If everyone could please try to get there around 1 pm, then we can randomly split up the different schools into different groups so that peoples can get to know one another instead of clumping together in your school fellowships. Plan on eating lunch beforehand and perhaps we can arrange dinner options at local restaurants for those who are interested.

In observance of Pastoral Care Week 2008, VNSNY Hospice Care offers the 2nd Annual “FROM PULPIT TO BEDSIDE” Seminar for religious professionals and lay pastoral caregivers. Designed for clergy and other religious leaders, the focus on “practical dying” will explore how faith congregations can educate, prepare and support members in preparations that can reclaim dying as a natural and, ultimately, spiritual process. The 3-hour program includes a keynote address, “Dying Well Takes Practice,” by James Avery, M.D. As Medical Director of VNSNY Hospice, Dr. Avery heads a team of eight VNS Hospice physicians, all certified in Hospice & Palliative Care Medicine. He is well known locally and nationally for his engaging presentations. The Panel Presentation of local experts will explore how congregations can support realistic steps among its faith community members such as completing a health care proxy, appointing a power of attorney, developing advanced directives, having end-of-life conversations within the family, pre-planning funeral arrangements and creating ethical/spiritual wills. This 3-hour seminar will address:

• Religious leaders’ role in end-of-life preparations.

• Communication about dying, death and bereavement.

• Information about resources and partnerships for end-of-life care.

National Pastoral Care Week was established in 1985 as an annual observance to honor all practitioners of pastoral care and to promote continuing education for clergy, laity, and institutional employees regarding the value of pastoral care.

Dr. Brad Cruse
Brad completed dental school in 2003 at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry and a one year post-graduate hospital residency at the University Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. After residency, he worked part-time as a private practice associate and part-time as a clinical faculty member with the University of Louisville Ryan White HIV/AIDS dental program. In 2006, Brad and his family moved to New York City. Brad currently works as a staff general dentist in one the largest HIV/AIDS centers in New York City. He and his wife Laura live on the Upper West Side with two children, Hanna and Caroline.

Dr. Bridget Ko
Growing up with a father who served the underserved of the greater Boston area as a Pediatric dentist and Orthodontist, Bridget Ko has always had a desire to serve here in the States. After studying Biochemistry and Studio Art at Boston College, she went on to receive her D.M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in 2004. During dental school, she got a glimpse of the greater worldview of God’s ministry beyond America during a STM trip to Mexico. Since completing Orthodontics residency at NYU College of Dentistry in 2007, and practicing in NYC’s Chinatown, God has a placed a burden in her heart for this city and it’s people. She attends Vision Church, where she met her husband, Steve. This past summer in 2008 they went on a medical missions trip to the Ixcan region of Guatemala with their church and they are planning for Mwanza, Tanzania in June 2009. For them, it is the beginning of a journey encompassing medicine/dentistry, ministry, and international public health. more…

Anna Lee is a staff worker with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship (IVCF), pioneering Graduate and Faculty Ministries (GFM) at New York University, where she has served for the last five years as IV’s undergraduate staff worker. She graduated from NYU with a BA in Journalism (’97) and a MSW (’01), working as a social worker in a pediatric AIDS clinic before joining staff with IV. Anna is excited to love and serve her alma mater’s graduate students and faculty, the largest private university in the U.S. with approximately 50,000 students (about half of whom are graduate students) and 3,000 faculty. She is deeply committed to helping integrate faith, justice, vocation, and work. She enjoys reading several good books at once, crafty hobbies, experimental cooking, and playing with her nephew and niece.
