Attending & Resident Fall Retreat - Weekend of Oct 10-12, 2008

Sep 28, 2008 @ 04:00 pm by GregT

Dr. Ali Ko had this to say about the retreat:

Twenty physicians, dentists, residents, and their families participated in the First Annual Greater NYC Retreat at Camp of the Woods for a time of Rest & Restoration. It was a wonderful time of praying, sharing, and community building. Dr. Elaine Eng led a powerful devotional focused upon Acts 1. Dr. Brad Cruse shared his testimony. Dr. Rebekah Kim led worship. The Council convened for their quarterly business meeting and all attending physicians and dentists were welcome. All had a chance to enjoy God’s creation as they hiked amongst the stunning fall foliage. The Saturday evening bonfire with S’mores gave us all chance to relive childhood memories and create new ones. We now have two attending physicians, Drs. Elaine Eng & Olympia Kovich, who are spearheading attending fellowship and future gatherings.

Intermed Picnic - Sat, Oct 4, 2008

Sep 28, 2008 @ 03:00 pm by GregT

Approximately 60 students and 3 attendings from Columbia, Cornell, Mount Sinai, New York COM, New York Medical College (NYMC), New York University (NYU), Robert Wood Johnson (RWJ), Sophie Davis, SUNY-Downstate, and Touro COM, attended this gathering held in Riverbank State Park. We were blessed by a brisk but sunny October day. Worship was led by a couple students and then David Chen from RWJ helped break the ice by having everyone introduce themselves and then have us spray each other with silly string! After grace was said by Dr. Ako Tabetah, a picnic lunch was served. Group photos of those attending were taken and those present broke off to fellowship with each other. Dr. Ali Ko offered spiritual support to the students as well as opportunities to meet with Christian Attendings.

Medical Missions Fundraiser - Sep 26, 2008

Sep 14, 2008 @ 10:00 pm by GregT

This fundraiser was a roaring success with about 70 people attending in support of a medical missions to Haiti, organized by MedMissions. All present were treated to a dinner of Haitian food and to four hours of rocking music and worship!!

Led by medical students from Downstate, Mark Saintjour and Adeline Abraham, the missions trip will be going from December 26 - Jan 2 this year. So far the list of those students going (from the greater NYC medical schools) includes:
Mark & Adeline, Jeanette Tse, Moeun Sun, Terry Kay, Benjamin Lok, Brandon Hayes, Sophia Morriseau, Sarah Jones, Sharon Daniel, Keith Chu, William Freed-Pastor, Victor Nivar, Sam Mathews, Winnifred Lamarre, Charles Esenwa, and Ashley Treece (from California), as are Drs. Gardy Valentin, Gates (from Texas) with his wife and daughter, and the founder of MedMissions, Dr. Brent Hambrick. Twelve physicians in Haiti will also be traveling with the group as local contacts and mentors.

The fundraiser was held at NYU School of Medicine in room SLH E. We would like to thank all those who performed that night for donating their time and energy and for rocking the place for four hours! God bless Ted Ferenczy, Cate Song, Steve Brown, DMP & One Accord, Lighthouse, members of Crossroad Tabernacle, The David Metayer Creole Project, Denny Simon and John Seale, and Sophia’s father, Mr. Morriseau. Of course, several of the students who are going to Haiti participated in organizing the event, but a special shout-out must be given to Elijah Kim who played the part of a hapless nonbeliever.

Money is tight for this group of warm-hearted individuals who seek to administer to the poor and spread the Gospel in Haiti. Checks can be made out to MedMissions; you may contact Marc at marc.saintjour(at)downstate.edu or Terry at terryjkay(at)gmail.com as to where to send your gifts. Medications can also be donated. See here for a list of medications that are being requested. Chloroquine 250 mg for anti-malaria prophylaxis is also wanted.

Citywide Dental Fellowship - Sep 13, 2008

Sep 12, 2008 @ 01:11 am by alikomd

Hosted by Dr. Bridget Ko, this fellowship group met on Saturday, September 13th at 7 pm. Dental students, oral surgery residents, and dentists, an orthodontist, and an otolaryngologist came together to dine on a delectable meal prepared by Bridget. Thanks Bridget!!

It was a wonderful time of encouragement and prayer. By God’s grace, this second citywide gathering revealed (1) the need to have a group committed to creating a safe place to discuss the unique challenges of Christian dentists in their workplaces & homes (2) the desire to learn, discuss, and model what it means to integrate our faith with our profession - what it means to be a Christian dentist, (3) the desire to have prayer/accountability/community groups, and (4) the joy of and desire for domestic and overseas missions experiences.  Overarching the discussion and prayer was asking God to help us see patients the way that He sees them.

We were blessed to hear seasoned dentists share their experiences including -

- Dr. George Kuryllo how he tries to practice counter-culturally - spending much more time with patients to share Christ’s love & compassion at the expense of financial gain.

-Dr. Brad Cruse was able to help organize an event called City Uprising - which turned out to be one of the largest citywide HIV testing outreachs to date in NYC.

Upcoming gatherings

October will be @ NYU - to be announced - contact Christy - cc1952@nyu.edu

November 15, 2008 (Saturday 7:30 - 9:30pm @ W 101st & Broadway ) will be hosted by Dr. Cruse

NYU Medical Fellowship - Sep 3, 2008

Aug 21, 2008 @ 08:37 am by alikomd

Benjamin Lok set up the recent NYU Medical Fellowship meeting. His review of the event below:

Our first fellowship meeting went very well! Praise God!
We had over 7 new participants (6 of them 1st years!) InterVarsity Staff Worker, Anna Lee, delivered a great teaching to us about not idolizing and not basing our worth on what we ‘produce’ whether it be grades, research projects, etc. Rather we should remember to focus on God, His calling for us and His infinite worth. Last, but not least, we enjoyed tasty sushi to welcome the new academic year! Things are looking to be exciting for NYU this year with our vision to reach out to our NYU medical community as well as our greater NYC community.
